Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev, held in Tehran on Tuesday.
The Iranian president described the Republic of Azerbaijan as holding a special place in Iran’s neighborhood policy, referring to the two nations as relatives and brothers and calling for the maximum use of their capacities and geographical advantages to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen ties between their peoples.
He said Iran-Azerbaijan relations are closely interconnected in scientific, cultural, economic, political and security fields, stressing the need for joint efforts to further consolidate cooperation.
Pezeshkian emphasized that the common border should be viewed as an opportunity for greater interaction rather than an obstacle to closer relations. He also welcomed the understandings reached during Mustafayev’s meetings with Iran’s ministers of roads and urban development and energy, calling for their swift implementation.
The president described transportation and communications networks as key instruments for bringing the two countries and their peoples closer together, calling for the expansion and integration of land, air and rail links.
He said stronger connectivity would create greater opportunities for strengthening bilateral relations and called for continued joint efforts to implement existing agreements and advance the mutual interests of Iran and Azerbaijan.
Mustafayev, for his part, briefed Pezeshkian on his talks with several Iranian ministers and the understandings reached during those meetings.
For his part, the Azerbaijani deputy prime minister reaffirmed Baku’s determination to further develop relations with Tehran, stressing the need to follow up on and implement existing agreements and understandings.
He also highlighted the two countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation in transportation and communications, emphasizing the importance of strengthening transit routes and corridors and making greater use of existing capacities in the sector.
