Araqchi: US Return to Islamabad MoU Can Restore Normalcy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The US’ return to its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding would pave the way for a return to normal conditions in the region, the Iranian foreign minister said.

Abbas Araqchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday, during which the two sides discussed bilateral issues as well as the latest regional and international developments.

The Iranian foreign minister attributed the current tensions in the region to the US’ regrettable violation of its commitments under the Islamabad MoU.

“The solution is simple. The American side’s return to and adherence to its commitments and signature in the Islamabad memorandum of understanding will pave the way for a return to normal conditions,” Araqchi said.

Araqchi also explained the latest status of Iran-Oman negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz, announcing significant progress in the two countries’ talks on determining a temporary transit route through the strategic waterway.

He stressed the continuation of consultations between Iran and Oman to reach agreement on mechanisms for the future management of the Strait of Hormuz.

For his part, the Japanese foreign minister expressed concern over the escalation of tensions in the region and stressed the need for continued diplomatic consultations and coordination among regional countries and other stakeholders to establish security in the region and ensure free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The two senior diplomats also agreed to follow up on several bilateral and consular issues.
