In a statement issued on Monday morning, the IRGC said its air defense forces intercepted the American drone with missile fire while it was flying over the strategic waterway.
“A few minutes ago, with missile fire from the ever-vigilant fighters of the IRGC’s modern air defense, a US long-range MQ-9 unmanned aircraft was hit over the Strait of Hormuz and crashed into the blue waters of the Persian Gulf,” the statement said.
The IRGC announced earlier that it had carried out a combined missile-and-drone strike on US facilities at Jordan’s King Hussein and Al-Azraq airbases in retaliation for an American attack on Larak Island, warning of “more devastating responses” to further aggression.
Separately, the Iranian Army said it launched dozens of attack drones at US helicopters and personnel at Al Minhad airbase in the UAE, also in retaliation for the Larak attack.
