Ukraine Must Accept Responsibility for Attack on Iranian Ship: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s foreign minister said Ukraine's claim that its attack on an Iranian commercial vessel was unintentional is unacceptable in light of Kiev's own acknowledgment of responsibility, calling on the Ukrainian government to explicitly accept responsibility for a criminal act.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, in which the two sides discussed the latest developments related to the Strait of Hormuz.

Araqchi explained Iran's positions and considerations regarding the current regional situation, including the ongoing consultations with the Sultanate of Oman.

The Iranian foreign minister also rejected the European Union's "interventionist" statement concerning the French officials involved in violations in Tehran, saying the EU's support for the misconduct of French personnel serving at their country's embassy in Tehran was contrary to the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Referring to his recent telephone conversation with the Ukrainian foreign minister, during which Kiev insisted that the attack on the Iranian vessel had been unintentional, Araqchi said such a claim could not be accepted given the Ukrainian president's explicit admission of responsibility for the attack on the Iranian commercial ship.

He stressed that the Ukrainian government must explicitly accept responsibility for an illegal and criminal act that resulted in the martyrdom and injury of Iranian citizens and the damage to the Iranian commercial vessel.

Earlier, Iran summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Tehran to protest a criminal military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea that killed one Iranian sailor and wounded several others.

During the meeting, Iranian officials said the attack violated the UN Charter, constituted an act of aggression, threatened the security of all Caspian littoral states, and demanded that Kiev be held accountable and prosecute those responsible.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has also strongly condemned the attack, saying it violated Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and warning that the Ukrainian leadership's acknowledgment of the strike demonstrated the continuation of Kiev's hostile approach toward Iran.
