In a post on his X account following the phone call, Araqchi said he had been "assured by Ukrainian FM Andrii Sybiha that the attack on an Iranian ship was unintentional and Ukraine seeks no escalation."
The Iranian foreign minister added, "Iran does not seek escalation either, but made clear any attack on our citizens or interests is unacceptable. There must be restitution for losses."
The phone conversation came after Tehran strongly condemned Ukraine's attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which killed one Iranian sailor and injured another.
Iran denounced the incident as an act of aggression, summoned Ukraine's charge d'affaires in Tehran to lodge a formal protest, and demanded that Kiev accept responsibility and provide compensation for the losses.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sybiha said Ukraine sought to avoid "unnecessary escalation" with Iran and maintained that Kiev's military operations were aimed solely at defending Ukraine against Russia rather than targeting civilian vessels or individuals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously announced that Ukrainian forces had struck vessels allegedly involved in military cargo shipments linked to Iran, although he did not identify any specific vessel.
