PGSA Warns Vessels against Unauthorized Routes in Persian Gulf

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Affairs Authority (PGSA) warned vessels against navigating outside designated transit routes, saying such movements would not be covered by safe-passage guarantees, insurance protections, or related liabilities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the PGSA stressed that compliance with the routes announced by Iranian authorities remains a requirement for protected transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

“PGSA, in response to repeated inquiries, announces that any navigation through routes outside the framework designated by PGSA shall not be covered by guarantees of safe passage and will not benefit from insurance coverage or related liabilities,” it said.

“Any consequences arising from navigation through unauthorized routes shall rest with the owner, operator, and commander of the vessel,” the PGSA warned.

The warning follows transit procedures announced by the authority after the signing of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US and subsequent directives by relevant authorities aimed at facilitating vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

Under the earlier arrangements, vessels submitting transit requests in accordance with announced procedures are eligible for expedited passage. Transit applications must be submitted exclusively through PGSA’s official channels at least 48 hours before entering the designated area of the strait and include valid communication details.

The authority had also announced that during the 60-day period covered by the arrangement, no transit fees would be collected, while security, safety, environmental services and related Iranian insurance coverage would be provided at the government’s expense.
