The incident occurred at about 3:25 p.m. Central Time, prompting multiple emergency calls and a response from police and other first responders.
The two people killed, a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, were both from McPherson, Kansas, and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Of the 11 people taken to hospitals, five were children between the ages of 5 and 9, while the injured adults ranged in age from 28 to 68.
Capt. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department said 10 of the injured people suffered traumatic injuries, ranging from bruises to extremely severe injuries.
Police identified the driver as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, who remained at the scene after the truck entered the field and was later taken into custody.
“She has been cooperative to this point in the investigation,” Moses told reporters at a news conference Saturday evening.
He also said he believed one of the woman’s children was playing soccer at the complex that day, although not on the field where the incident occurred.
Two juveniles were inside the truck when it drove onto the field, police said.
When officers arrived, they found the truck at the western end of the field, where bystanders were already helping injured people, Moses said.
As investigators worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, police said they had interviewed more than 30 witnesses and urged anyone with photographs or video of the scene to share them with authorities.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators had established what happened but had not yet determined why.
“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” Sullivan said.
The incident prompted an outpouring of grief from local and state officials, as families had gathered at the complex to watch children play soccer.
The city announced on Facebook that all events at the sports complex had been canceled until further notice and asked the public to keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers.
