Mohammad Allahdad, managing director of Iran’s Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company (Tavanir), said an Iranian delegation held talks with Turkmen officials on expanding bilateral energy cooperation during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Turkmenistan for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders’ summit.
The Iranian delegation, led by Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadeq and including the heads of the country’s electricity and gas companies, met with Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov to discuss key areas of energy cooperation, Allahdad said.
He identified the main topics as extending the electricity import contract with Turkmenistan, increasing the volume of power exchanges, developing the third and fourth electricity exchange lines, and examining the feasibility of electricity transit through Turkmenistan to other countries.
He said the two sides have reached preliminary agreements to continue examining the proposals. Expert teams from both countries are expected to follow up on the technical, economic and operational aspects of the projects.
He added that, subject to the findings of expert studies and the fulfillment of implementation requirements, expanding cooperation could create new opportunities to increase electricity exchange capacity and strengthen energy ties between Iran and countries across the region.
