The decision applies to all students, as well as teaching, educational and administrative staff, with parents notified through schools’ official communication channels.
Parents received emails on Sunday informing them of the last-minute decision, according to messages seen by Agence France-Presse.
“We have just been informed by Saudi authorities that schools must remain closed all week,” read two separate messages seen by AFP.
Saudi authorities have not publicly provided an explanation for the decision, and the Ministry of Education had not officially announced the move at the time of publication.
The decision comes amid heightened regional tensions and continued Yemeni attacks on Saudi Arabia, which Yemeni authorities have described as a response to Saudi aggression against Yemen.
Yemen’s Ansarullah movement has recently announced a “capital-for-capital” equation in response to Saudi Arabia’s aggression and blockade against Yemen, while Yemeni forces reportedly added Riyadh to their list of targets last week.
