Pezeshkian said his visit to the US included extensive diplomatic engagements following the UN General Assembly, including meetings with the presidents and prime ministers of several countries, the president of the European Council and the UN secretary general, as well as interviews with international media, meetings with US think tanks and discussions with Iranian expatriates in New York.
He said Iran used the meetings and media engagements to clearly present the injustices suffered by Iran and the actions of the US and Israeli regime. He took a swipe at Washington and Tel Aviv for claiming to defend human rights while targeting infrastructure, people, scientists and various facilities, adding that sanctions that directly affect people's lives also constitute pressure on the Iranian nation.
The president stressed that Iran is not afraid of dialogue and engages in negotiations to demonstrate that it seeks to resolve issues through talks and expects international laws and commitments to be honored. “If an agreement is signed, both sides must abide by their commitments,” he said, stressing that Iran seeks nothing beyond its rights under international law and accepted commitments.
Pezeshkian also called for greater unity and cooperation among Muslim and regional countries, warning that they should not allow outside powers to create divisions among them. He said all Muslims are brothers and stressed that Iran’s unity and cohesion are essential for resisting pressures and plots, noting that Iranian unity has been praised by many countries in the region.
Referring to his widely reported speech at the UN General Assembly, Pezeshkian said remarks by the US president prompted Iran’s response and that he has spoken openly about the country’s beliefs and positions. He said those who target civilians, including children, women, elderly people, patients and scientists, cannot accuse others of terrorism and insecurity, stressing that Iran has a duty to firmly defend the rights of its people and its national positions.
