Abbas Araqchi made the remarks during a meeting with Khalilur Rahman, president of the 81st session of the General Assembly, held in New York on Saturday.
Congratulating Rahman on his election, Araqchi stressed the importance of an active role by the General Assembly president in safeguarding the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.
He expressed hope that Rahman’s presidency would be based on a “professional, balanced and responsible” approach, contrasting it with the harmful bias and politicization that characterized the previous presidency.
Referring to the theme of the 81st UN General Assembly, “Reviving Trust in the United Nations,” Araqchi said restoring confidence in the world body requires, above all, an end to grave violations of the Charter’s fundamental principles, particularly respect for national sovereignty and the prohibition of the use of force under Article 2 of the Charter.
He also called for preventing the instrumental use of the UN Security Council and ending impunity for those responsible for serious international crimes, particularly aggression, genocide and war crimes committed by the Israeli regime.
Araqchi briefed the UN General Assembly president on developments concerning peace and security in West Asia following the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran.
He said the US-Israeli military aggression, which began on February 28 during nuclear negotiations and continued in various forms, including a naval blockade and economic sanctions, “has no logic other than bullying and coercion.”
Araqchi also attributed the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz to the same “aggressive and interventionist actions.”
Rahman, for his part, expressed pleasure at meeting the Iranian foreign minister and reaffirmed his commitment to engaging professionally with all UN member states in fulfilling the responsibilities of the General Assembly.
