Speaking at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, Sheeran said the devastation and loss of civilian and children’s lives in Gaza had deeply affected him, while also criticizing the systemic injustice by the Israeli regime in the West Bank.
“I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind, because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics,” Sheeran said.
“But this is a humanitarian issue. I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.”
“What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” he said
“My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian life and loss of children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfolding the West Bank cannot be overlooked,” the singer-songwriter said.
Sheeran’s remarks came amid a controversy over Macklemore’s removal from the Loop Tour after the rapper publicly expressed support for Palestinians and said “Free Palestine” during performances.
Macklemore’s removal prompted other supporting acts to withdraw from the tour, while Sheeran later said the decision had been made by the tour’s promoter rather than by him.
Addressing the controversy, Sheeran said he had been forced to make difficult decisions and acknowledged that he had made mistakes.
“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” he said.
The controversy surrounding Macklemore has brought renewed attention to the treatment of pro-Palestinian expression in the music industry, with the rapper’s removal following objections from stadium operators to his comments about Israeli regime and Gaza.
As of late September 2026, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 73,910 Palestinians and wounded 174,914 since October 2023, with women and children making up a large majority of those killed; UNICEF has also reported that more than 64,000 children were killed or injured in Gaza between October 2023 and October 2025.
