Ali Zeinivand, the Interior Ministry’s political deputy and spokesperson, said the proposal aims to adjust the election calendar without amending the Constitution.
He said the ministry is finalizing the plan and intends to submit it to the government as a bill before sending it to the Parliament if approved.
According to Zeinivand, the current election calendar would require parliamentary elections in March 2028, followed by presidential elections in June or July, creating a gap of only two to three months between the two nationwide votes. He said this prompted the formation of a working group comprising representatives from the Interior Ministry, Parliament, the Parliament Research Center, the Constitutional Council, the Expediency Council and legal experts.
The official said the group has found a way to adjust the timing without changing the Constitution, under which the terms of the Parliament and presidency are four years. He explained that the proposal would allow the new Parliament to begin its term in late May while the presidential inauguration and other procedures take place according to their legal timetable.
If the government approves the bill and it subsequently passes through the required legislative procedures, the two elections could be held simultaneously in May 2028, he added.
