Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made the remarks in a post on his X account following Thursday’s Security Council vote, saying the Russian and Chinese vetoes have rejected the political abuse of the council.
“The unipolar order in which one side extracts concessions through force and coercion has ended,” he wrote.
“China and Russia’s vetoes rejected the political abuse of the Security Council and reaffirmed the rule of law,” Qalibaf added.
“We must defend multilateralism; unilateralism serves no one’s interests,” the Iranian Parliament speaker stated.
His message came after Russia and China vetoed a US-backed Security Council resolution on Thursday that sought to extend the mandate of a panel of experts tasked with monitoring UN sanctions on Iran.
The measure received 11 votes in favor, but the two permanent members’ vetoes blocked its adoption.
The panel’s mandate had been due to expire on September 27. The experts had not been appointed during the previous year because of disagreements among Security Council members.
“We strongly urge western colleagues to stop their very dangerous actions on the Iran front, which threaten further complication of settling the crisis in the Persian Gulf,” Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s UN Ambassador told the Security Council after the vote.
Iran’s mission to the UN also thanked Russia and China for opposing a “politically motivated” US draft resolution.
