Addressing a Wednesday session of the cabinet, President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his appreciation for the efforts of all managers, administrative bodies and executive agencies involved in implementing the gasoline plan.
He also thanked the public, drivers, gas station operators and all other personnel and stakeholders for their cooperation and support in carrying out the plan.
The president stressed the need to take necessary measures to prevent pressure and losses from being imposed on different segments of society, particularly disadvantaged groups.
Pezeshkian also stressed the implementation of the “one day a week without cars” initiative, saying the approach should begin with the government, public offices, organizations and state-owned companies.
He said that through its continuation and institutionalization, the initiative should gradually become a broader public movement and a widespread form of social participation.
Iran operates a multi-tier gasoline pricing system under which motorists receive subsidized fuel within designated monthly quotas. The first 60 liters are priced at 1,500 tomans per liter, while the next 50 liters cost 3,000 tomans. Consumption beyond the 110-liter monthly quota had previously been priced at 5,000 tomans per liter.
The government recently decided to double the third-tier rate to 10,000 tomans per liter, with the new price taking effect on September 8. The first two quotas remain unchanged.
The gasoline pricing reform comes amid concerns over rising domestic fuel consumption and the widening gap between gasoline production and demand.
