“It’s exactly where it was on day one,” Hamid Ali, Eygi’s husband, told Anadolu from his home in Seattle.
“We’re still asking for the same thing, which is an investigation as a first step into getting justice for her.”
Eygi, 26, was killed on Sept. 6, 2024, while participating in a demonstration in Beita, near Nablus.
The Israeli military said she was hit “indirectly and unintentionally” by gunfire that was not aimed at her, while witnesses and her family disputed the account and said she was deliberately targeted during a peaceful protest.
A Washington Post investigation reported that Eygi was shot about 20 minutes after clashes had ended and protesters had retreated more than 200 yards from Israeli forces.
Then-US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the killing as “unprovoked and unjustified,” but Washington has not opened an independent criminal investigation into her death.
For Eygi’s father, Mehmet Suat Eygi, the absence of a US investigation has undermined hopes for accountability.
“I don't have much hope for justice because America is the financier of Aysenur's killing. America therefore cannot investigate itself,” he told Anadolu.
Meanwhile, Brad Parker, associate director of policy at the Center for Constitutional Rights and a member of the legal team supporting Eygi’s family, said there had been no US criminal investigation or other accountability measures.
“There's no new developments on the investigation front, criminal investigation from the US, or really anything focused on accountability for Aysenur's killing,” he said.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has described Eygi’s killing as a “murder committed by the Netanyahu government,” while Turkish prosecutors opened their own investigation.
The US State Department said it had remained in contact with Eygi’s family and the Israeli government during Israel’s investigation.
The Justice Department and Israeli military did not respond to requests for comment.
As the family enters a third year without the independent investigation it has sought, Ali said it was preparing for a longer campaign for accountability.
“Ultimately, justice has not been served. What remains for us is a life without Aysenur.”
