Qalibaf: Iran-Iraq Cooperation Can Shape Regional Dynamics

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said stronger cooperation between Iran and Iraq could have a significant impact on regional developments and create new opportunities among Islamic and Arab countries.

Qalibaf made the remarks during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi in Baghdad on Wednesday, stressing that Iran and Iraq enjoy deep geographical, historical and religious ties as well as common interests as neighboring countries.

He said the two countries have “unparalleled opportunities” in bilateral relations and can play a unique role in regional affairs, particularly among Islamic and Arab nations.

Qalibaf also recalled Iran’s support for Iraq in the fight against Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists, stressing that Tehran stood by Iraq regardless of sectarian, ethnic or religious differences because defending Iraq against terrorism was considered a duty.

He highlighted the sacrifices made in the fight against terrorism, naming Lt. General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis as symbols of the unity and deep friendship between the two nations.

For his part, al-Zaidi described Iran and Iraq as two nations whose destinies are intertwined, emphasizing their shared history and geography.

He recalled that Iran was the first country to respond to Iraq’s request for assistance during the Daesh crisis and said Baghdad would reciprocate support for those who stand by Iraq.

The Iraqi premier stressed that Iran’s support had been provided without expectations of return and called for the two countries to continue their relations in the same spirit, particularly by standing together during difficult times.

The two sides also exchanged views on shared political, economic and security issues.
