Iran Seeks Closer Agricultural Cooperation with Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Developing agricultural cooperation and strengthening food security are at the center of Iranian Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri’s visit to Afghanistan, where he is set to discuss ways to expand economic and trade ties between the two neighboring countries.

Nouri has traveled to Kabul at the invitation of Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

Upon arrival, Nouri said that since Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the Iranian side of the Iran-Afghanistan Joint Economic Commission, he will hold meetings with Afghan officials involved in the commission to explore avenues for expanding economic and commercial cooperation.

The Iranian minister highlighted the “deep ties” between the two nations, saying their shared historical, religious and linguistic bonds, along with the friendship and close relations between their officials and peoples, constitute a valuable foundation for further strengthening bilateral ties in various fields.

Nouri emphasized the potential for cooperation in food security, saying Iran is interested in close cooperation with Afghanistan in job creation, export development, agricultural trade and food security.

He also pointed to Afghanistan’s young population and natural resources as major development opportunities, saying these capacities could provide a suitable foundation for the country’s progress.

Iran, as a friend and neighbor of the Afghan people, is ready to share its experience and capabilities in this process, he added.

“Investment development, training and transfer of experience, exchanges of specialized delegations, and the expansion of trade and economic relations” are among the areas that could be placed on the bilateral cooperation agenda, Nouri said, expressing hope that his visit would be an effective step toward deepening Iran-Afghanistan relations.
