Iran, Kyrgyzstan Move to Expand Mining Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Kyrgyzstan agreed to expand trade and joint investment while strengthening cooperation in industry, mining, energy, transportation and free trade zones to deepen economic ties.

Economy

Iranian Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade Mohammad Atabak and Kyrgyz Minister of Economy and Commerce Bakyt Sydykov discussed ways to increase bilateral trade and investment within regional frameworks, including the Eurasian Economic Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The two sides called for developing joint production projects for export to third-country markets and expanding cooperation in knowledge-based products, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. They also emphasized greater investment in industrial and mining projects and cooperation between free trade zones.

Atabak expressed Iran’s readiness to cooperate with Kyrgyzstan in mineral exploration, extraction and processing, mining-industry modernization, technical and engineering services, and technology transfer, taking advantage of the Central Asian country's mineral resources.

The officials also discussed activating the Bandar Abbas–Osh railway route, establishing direct flights, reducing transit costs and completing regional transportation corridors. They stressed the importance of participating in the Belt and Road Initiative and using Iran's transit capacities to connect Kyrgyzstan with regional and international markets.

Other areas of discussion included upgrading banking and logistics infrastructure, holding a joint banking committee, using national currencies in trade, establishing joint investment funds and developing alternative financing mechanisms.
