Araqchi Warns Bulgaria against Aiding US Aggression

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reminded his Bulgarian counterpart that allowing US military aircraft to use a Bulgarian air base in support of military operations against Iran constitutes participation in aggression, urging Sofia to urgently reconsider its decision.

In a telephone conversation with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova on Thursday, Araqchi explained the latest developments in the region, the continuation of US aggression against Iran, and Washington's actions to fuel tensions in West Asia.

Araqchi said Bulgaria's approval of a US request to deploy American military aircraft at Bezmer Air Base to support military operations was condemnable, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the traditional friendly relations between Iran and Bulgaria.

He said it would be appropriate for the Bulgarian government to urgently reconsider the decision.

Referring to Article 3 of the UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 on the Definition of Aggression, Araqchi stressed that making the territory of one state available to another state for the purpose of committing an act of aggression against a third state constitutes an act of aggression.

The Iranian foreign minister emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran would not hesitate to defend its national interests and security against any act of aggression or hostile action.

He added that "any party that participates in any way in carrying out a military attack against Iran will certainly have to accept responsibility for its consequences."

For her part, the Bulgarian foreign minister recalled the history of good relations between the two countries and said Bulgaria had no intention of participating in the war.

She also reaffirmed her country's support for diplomacy and efforts to reduce tensions in the West Asia region.
