Americans Support Netanyahu Arrest by 22-Point Margin: Survey

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Nearly half of Americans believer the US should arrest Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his actions in Israel’s war in Gaza, according to a new poll from The Economist/YouGov.

When asked if the US should enforce an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu, 49 percent of respondents in the poll said “yes,” while 27 percent said “no” and 23 percent were unsure, The Hill reported.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of using starvation as a method of warfare and committing crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution. It also alleges that the prime minister intentionally directed an attack against the civilian population in Gaza.

Last week, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) moved away from a prior vow to arrest Netanyahu should he fly to his city in a few months for the annual United Nations General Assembly.

“It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does,” Mamdani said in a video posed to the social platform X.

“And I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant,” he added.

Israel and the US do not fall under the rulings of the ICC, with both countries never having ratified the court’s founding treaty. The ICC, however, asserts jurisdiction over Palestinian territories.

Forty-seven percent of respondents in The Economist/YouGov poll said that they believe Netanyahu “is guilty of war crimes in Gaza,” while 24 percent disagreed and 29 percent were unsure.

The Economist/YouGov poll took place between July 25 and 27, featuring 1,559 respondents and plus or minus 3.3 percentage points as its margin of error.
