During the Friday meeting, President Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Iraq’s sympathy and support following recent developments, describing it as a reflection of the deep historical, cultural, and religious bonds between the two nations.
He said Iran considers Iraq not merely a neighbor but a brotherly and close country, adding that geographical borders can never weaken the connection between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples due to their strong cultural and religious ties.
Referring to recent US and Israeli attacks against Iran, the Iranian president described them as violations of international law, saying they included the targeting of civilians, infrastructure, and scientific centers, as well as the assassination of martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and other officials.
Pezeshkian warned that the Zionist regime seeks to sow division and instability in the region and stressed that Islamic countries must stand united against such threats. He added that the Israeli regime does not seek security or stability for the region but aims to perpetuate tension and conflict.
The Iranian president also called for expanding bilateral cooperation, saying that with strong political will, agreements between the two countries should move beyond signing and into full implementation.
He emphasized that regional countries are capable of managing their affairs independently without foreign intervention, and that unity and cooperation are essential for lasting security and development.
For his part, Iraqi President Nizar Amidi expressed condolences to the Iranian government and people over recent events, saying Iraq shares Iran’s grief and honors the memory of those martyred.
He said Iran and Iraq share deep historical, religious, cultural, and economic ties, which place greater responsibility on both sides to further strengthen relations.
The Iraqi president also condemned recent attacks against Iran, noting that Iraq has consistently expressed its opposition at both official and public levels, while warning of their dangerous consequences for regional stability.
Praising Iran’s resilience, he said the Iranian nation demonstrated remarkable resistance and perseverance during recent developments and successfully defended its national interests.
Amidi added that regional security depends on cooperation, mutual trust, and dialogue among regional states, stressing that sustainable security cannot be achieved through external powers.
He concluded by expressing hope for expanded cooperation and closer consultations between Tehran and Baghdad in the future, particularly in security, economic, and regional fields.
