TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said closer alignment between Tehran and New Delhi on regional and international issues can help expand bilateral cooperation, as he held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a telephone conversation on Tuesday, Pezeshkian congratulated India on successfully hosting the BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting and voiced hope that cooperation between Iran and India within the BRICS framework would continue to expand.

He reaffirmed Iran's commitment to strengthening its longstanding ties with India, describing the relationship as rooted in decades of friendship and mutual respect. Pezeshkian said the two countries have significant potential to broaden cooperation in political, economic, trade, transit, and international affairs.

The Iranian president stressed the need for closer coordination and more effective use of existing capacities to identify and implement new opportunities for cooperation. He added that Tehran and New Delhi share similar views on many regional and international issues, particularly within multilateral organizations, and said these common positions could further strengthen their strategic partnership.

Referring to the memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the US to end the recent conflict, Pezeshkian reiterated that the agreement's implementation depends on all parties honoring their commitments. He said Iran remains committed to its obligations and expressed hope that the other side would also implement the MoU in good faith to help secure lasting peace, stability, and security in the region.

He also emphasized that the international community should support efforts to consolidate peace and ensure that aggression and the use of force have no place in international relations.

Pezeshkian thanked the Indian government and Prime Minister Modi for their constructive positions in support of regional peace and stability, expressing hope that responsible countries would work together to prevent attempts to undermine regional security.

For his part, Modi offered India's condolences over the martyrdom of senior Iranian officials and citizens during the recent US-Israeli war of aggression and announced that New Delhi would send a special delegation to attend the funeral ceremony of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

The Indian prime minister also reaffirmed his country's support for efforts to promote peace and stability in West Asia, describing regional security as vital to global stability.

Modi welcomed closer cooperation among BRICS member states and formally invited President Pezeshkian to attend the upcoming BRICS Leaders' Summit, which India will host, expressing hope that the gathering would further strengthen multilateral cooperation among member countries.
