In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Baghdad on Sunday, Amidi emphasized the continuation of the principled position of the Iraqi government and people in supporting the Iranian nation against foreign aggression.
He said that under the current circumstances, regional countries should enhance coordination and cooperation to help establish peace and stability throughout West Asia.
For his part, Araqchi conveyed warm greetings from Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian to the Iraqi president and congratulated him on the formation of Iraq’s new government.
The Iranian foreign minister also reaffirmed Tehran’s determination to expand cooperation with Iraq across all sectors.
The two sides reviewed bilateral relations in political, economic, security and people-to-people fields and exchanged views on ways to further strengthen ties.
They also discussed the regional security situation and the consequences stemming from the military aggression by the US and the Zionist regime against Iran, including the insecurity imposed on the Strait of Hormuz.
Referring to the provisions of the memorandum of understanding on ending the imposed war, Araqchi described violations of some clauses of the agreement by the US and the Zionist regime—particularly its first clause—as a serious obstacle to restoring regional security and stability.
He stressed that Iran is pursuing implementation of the agreement’s provisions in good faith based on the principle of “commitment in return for commitment,” while also acting firmly in response to any breach of obligations by the other parties.
Araqchi also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Iraqi government and people in hosting millions of Iranian pilgrims visiting the holy shrines in Iraq.
He further described the funeral ceremony for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in Iraq as a unique opportunity to deepen solidarity and friendship between the Iranian and Iraqi nations and thanked the Iraqi government for its arrangements in this regard.
