Negotiations Make No Sense after Ceasefire Violations: Iran’s Parliament Speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Speaker of Iran’s Parliament said given the serious violations committed by aggressors, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations with the US would make no sense.

Politics

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made the remark in a post on X on Wednesday, saying the US has violated its commitments.

Earlier in the day, the US formally accepted Iran’s 10-point proposal as the foundation for a ceasefire, conceding to every core demand put forward by the Islamic Republic.

However, while one of the points of the proposal is cessation of attacks on all fronts, including in Lebanon, Israel carried out devastating attacks on Lebanon, killing hundreds of civilians on Wednesday.

“From the very beginning, we have been following the current process with distrust, and as expected, the United States of America has once again violated its commitments before the negotiations even began,” Qalibaf wrote in his post.

“As the President of the United States has clearly stated, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ten-point plan is the basis and framework for these talks,” he added.

“However, three points of this proposal have been violated so far:

1- Failure to adhere to the first point of the ten-point plan regarding the ceasefire in Lebanon — a commitment that (Pakistani) Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also explicitly referred to, declaring it ‘an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and other regions, effective immediately’;

2- The entry of an intruding drone into Iranian skies, which was destroyed in the city of Lar in Fars Province, in clear violation of the clause prohibiting any further violation of Iranian airspace;

3- Refusal to accept Iran’s right to enrich uranium, which was the sixth point of this framework.

Now, even before the talks began, three key clauses of the ‘Basic Framework for Negotiations’ have been openly and blatantly violated.

In such circumstances, neither a bilateral ceasefire nor negotiations make sense.”
