Iran Affirms Sovereignty over Hormuz Strait: Passage Open to All Except "Enemies"

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ali Mousavi, Iran's ambassador to Britain and its permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international navigation for all except the enemies of the Islamic Republic.

Politics

Mousavi made the remarks during an interview with Xinhua news agency on the sidelines of the 36th extraordinary session of the IMO Council in London, held on Wednesday and Thursday to address the situation in the Persian Gulf region, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.

He emphasized that the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is possible with coordination regarding security and safety arrangements.

Mousavi added that international commitments must be accompanied by full respect for Iran's territorial integrity and rights.

The Iranian envoy highlighted that the Strait of Hormuz is open to all except "enemies".

He stressed that the safety of vessels and their crews requires coordination with Iranian authorities.

Meanwhile, Mousavi declared that Iran stands ready to cooperate with the IMO and other countries to enhance maritime safety and protect seafarers.

Tehran believes that aggression by the US and the Zionist regime lies at the root of the current situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, he said.

Mousavi underscored that diplomacy remains Iran's priority.

However, he insisted that halting all aggression and building mutual trust and confidence are even more essential.

Iran is prepared to facilitate the transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, provided that such passage is coordinated with Iranian authorities and carried out with complete respect for its sovereignty and security, he said.

As an IMO member, Iran is fully conscious of its international obligations in maritime transport, he added.

The envoy stressed that these obligations must be upheld alongside respect for Iran's rights, including its territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and dignity.

"Everything should be communicated to the Iranian relevant authorities," he said.

He noted that the safety of vessels and seafarers forms part of such arrangements.

Iran will persist in cooperating with the IMO and maritime authorities of other nations to ensure safer international navigation and stronger protection for seafarers, he said.

The envoy welcomed any initiatives or suggestions aimed at more secure international shipping.

He attributed the present circumstances in the Strait of Hormuz to "their aggression, their unlawful military activities against the Iranian people and Iranian territorial integrity," pointing to ongoing operations by the US and Israel since February 28.

Mousavi described recent strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure as "crossing another red line".

He affirmed that Iran would adopt appropriate defensive measures and regard any US or Israeli assets as legitimate targets.

The ambassador reiterated Iran's preference for diplomacy in resolving disputes.

Separately, Mousavi pointed to the remarkable resilience and unity displayed by the Iranian nation amid the conflict.

He observed that Iran has witnessed "very, very important and significant unity and solidarity" during the war.

On the wider regional consequences, he warned that the war constitutes "a dangerous and very bad phenomenon and a catastrophe for all of the world".

It impacts not only Iran but also neighboring Persian Gulf states, along with global energy markets and food security, he said.

Mousavi called upon nations, especially those in the region, to question the US and Israel on why they initiated the conflict.

He urged the international community to condemn the acts of aggression against Iran and to act decisively to prevent their recurrence, as they violate the United Nations Charter and international law.
