Iran Not Pursuing Nukes: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, describing the country’s stance as rooted in religious and ethical principles rather than political calculation.

Politics

In comments at a provincial meeting in the northern city of Sari on Thursday, Pezeshkian stressed that Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has explicitly declared that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons.

The president noted that such a position is not a temporary political statement but is founded on the Islamic Republic’s religious and jurisprudential beliefs.

There is a significant difference between a religiously grounded stance and a political opinion, Pezeshkian noted, adding that while a politician might express views based on expediency, timing, or power considerations, a religious leader cannot speak contrary to deeply held beliefs or Sharia rulings.

The president emphasized that the declaration against pursuing nuclear weapons reflects Iran’s immutable and definitive principle, making any movement toward such weapons fundamentally illegitimate and unthinkable within the country’s religious framework.

He concluded that Iran’s position on nuclear weapons is therefore neither a political tactic nor subject to change, but a clear and permanent policy anchored in faith and law.

Iran and the US have held two rounds of indirect nuclear negotiations in recent weeks, mediated by Oman.

The third round of talks kicked off in Geneva on Thursday.
