The summons was issued by Alireza Yousefi, the director general for Western Europe of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, after the Italian foreign minister made statements concerning the IRGC.
During the meeting, Yousefi strongly protested the Italian foreign minister’s irresponsible positions, referring to the IRGC’s legal status as part of the official armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He also warned of the destructive consequences of any labeling or designation against the IRGC and called for a revision of the Italian foreign minister’s ill-considered approaches toward Iran.
The Italian ambassador said she would convey the matter to her government as soon as possible.
Amadei was summoned after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday that he would formally propose in Brussels this week to add IRGC to the EU terrorist list.
The move marked a U-turn in Italy’s stance as Rome, alongside France and Spain, had until now been among the countries blocking an IRGC listing, according to two EU diplomats.
