Iran Entitled to Nuclear Energy, Enrichment: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reasserting Iran’s inalienable right to enjoy nuclear energy and enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei deplored inconsistent messages coming from the US.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Monday, Baqaei dismissed the US president’s recent comments about the need for the full dismantlement of Iran's nuclear program.

Iran’s stances are unchanging within the principled framework based on which it has entered indirect negotiations with the US, he stated.

“What is clear is that Iran’s principled stances on the peaceful use of nuclear energy are (its) legitimate rights,” the spokesman underlined, adding, “It is Iran’s right to enjoy membership in the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the right to enrichment.”

The spokesperson reaffirmed that Iran’s indirect talks with the US revolve around the nuclear issues and the removal of sanctions. He warned that raising irrelevant demands in the talks would not be helpful at all.

Asked about the differences in Iran-US talks, Baqaei said Iran has indicated its commitment to proceeding with the course of dialogue in practice.

He noted that Oman, which acts as an intermediary, will express its view about the next round of talks.

The spokesman also criticized the unhelpful “contradictory messages” from the American officials after the US president warned the customers of Iranian oil and petrochemical products to stop purchasing from Iran.

He underscored that such paradoxical US policies could not influence Iran’s resolve to pursue its principles.

“If the American side is sincere in its demand that Iran should not possess nuclear bombs, I believe that many problems can be resolved,” he said.

The spokesman also warned against attempts to trigger the so-called snapback provisions of the 2015 nuclear deal, saying, “We see no reason to activate it. The fact that certain parties are abusing the situation is rejected.”
