Iran’s Diplomat Deplores UNSC’s Politically-Tainted Decisions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian official referred to the United Nations Security Council as an international body with political biases, whose decisions are not fair.

“There are conflicting opinions about the UNSC in the country... . Many people perceive the UNSC as a court of justice, and thus expect it to adopt fair decisions,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi said, addressing a UN Security Council simulation session held in Tehran Peace Museum on Saturday.

"It (perception) is a very big mistake," he underscored.

“The UNSC is exactly a politically-tainted body, and takes political decisions based on the interests of its permanent member states,” the Iranian diplomat added.

He also deplored the council over its inability to resolve important issues at the international level.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security as well as accepting new members to the United Nations and approving any changes to its United Nations Charter.

Critics of the council often describe it as an undemocratic international body, and argue it fails its principal task, mainly because of the veto power granted to only five of its members—Russia, Britain, France, China, and the United States.
