Iranian Diplomat, Egyptian President Meet in Addis Ababa

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held talks on a whole range of issues, including the latest developments in the region.

In a brief meeting in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the African Union Summit, Amir Abdollahian and Sisi underlined that Iran and Egypt share the common stance in their opposition to terrorist acts in the region, Syria and Iraq in particular.

The Iranian diplomat condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, in which dozens of Egyptian soldiers were killed.

On Thursday evening, militants fired a barrage of rockets and set off car bombs in security premises in Arish, the capital city of North Sinai province, killing dozens and injuring many more. The attacks extended to two big security checkpoints in nearby Rafah city.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian affiliate of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Amir Abdollahian emphasized the importance of national unity and the participation of all political groups in governing the Arab country.

He also stressed the necessity for unity in the Islamic world in a bid to counter the threats posed to the region by Takfiri groups.
