Iran’s FM, UN Envoy Confer on Syria by Phone

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s chief diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif and UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi discussed the latest developments in crisis-hit Syria in a telephone conversation, with both sides reiterating the need for political solution to the prolonged turmoil.

During the telephone conversation on Monday, Foreign Minister Zarif commended Brahimi for his efforts to wind down the Syrian crisis politically.

The Iranian diplomat also hailed as “effective” the attempts Brahimi has been making to put an end to the war in Syria.

Both Zarif and Brahimi emphasized the necessity for a political solution as the “most appropriate option” to settle the war that has dragged on for 3 years.

Syria's war that started in 2011 has killed over 130,000 people so far and forced more than 2 million to flee abroad. Another 4 million have been displaced inside the country.

Iranian officials have on different occasions insisted that a political approach would be the sole solution to the three-year-old crisis in Syria, saying that campaign against terrorism should be top on the agenda of any regional or international conference on Syria.
