Driscoll will advise OpenAI’s leadership, government officials and industry partners on incorporating advanced AI into national security, cybersecurity and military strategies, particularly in the United States and its allied countries.
The appointment highlights the growing militarization of artificial intelligence, as major technology companies increasingly align their capabilities with Washington’s military ambitions and strategic priorities.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the appointment, saying: “AI should give people more power over their lives and people should have a say in how it’s developed,” Altman said.
However, Driscoll’s new position signals a growing shift toward military applications of AI, raising concerns about the use of technologies originally promoted for public benefit as instruments of military power and geopolitical competition.
Driscoll previously served as the 26th Secretary of the United States Army, overseeing military operations, modernization programs and resource allocation.
His departure followed reported disagreements with War Secretary Pete Hegseth over Army leadership and modernization priorities.
“I’m joining OpenAI to help the United States and our allies put this technology to work responsibly, for the people who keep us safe,” he said.
