Nearly 80,000 Palestinian Students Barred from School by Israeli Siege

The closures have affected public, private and UN-run schools throughout the central Hebron education district, according to a statement carried by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The Israeli military restrictions have deprived thousands of children of access to education, with displaced students losing their books, study materials and places to learn. Teachers have also struggled to reach their schools because of roadblocks and movement restrictions, further deepening the disruption, the union said.

In a separate incident on Sunday, Israeli occupation forces detained 10 teachers from Jinba Basic Mixed School for several hours on Khallat al-Dabaa Road in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron. The troops also held their vehicle, leaving students waiting for their teachers and preventing normal classes from taking place.

Condemning the measures, the teachers’ union described the road closures and detention of educators and students as “an assault on the right to education and on people’s lives and dignity.”

The union called on education organizations worldwide to increase pressure on governments to end the restrictions, reopen school routes and protect Palestinian students and teachers. It also urged Education International to lead diplomatic efforts and dispatch a delegation to Hebron and Masafer Yatta to document the consequences of the Israeli military campaign.

Meanwhile, the Israeli operation entered its 10th consecutive day on Sunday, with more than 3,300 Palestinians displaced or otherwise affected, particularly in the al-Jalda and Ain Deir Bahha areas. At least 15 homes and other structures have been demolished.

Israeli occupation forces have sealed off Hebron and surrounding villages, seized Palestinian homes and converted them into military positions. Continued demolitions and damage to infrastructure have compounded the suffering of residents, disrupting essential services and ordinary daily life.
