Pezeshkian made the remarks before departing Tehran for Russia on Monday evening to attend the 8th summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), where energy security, international cooperation and the expansion of bilateral ties are expected to feature prominently.
He described the GECF, which Iran helped establish, as a platform for cooperation among major gas-producing countries, similar to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The president noted that the forum comprises 12 full members and eight observer countries, whose combined resources account for more than 70% of the world's proven natural gas reserves, giving them considerable influence over global energy supplies.
Pezeshkian said regional instability has disrupted the conditions necessary for the free movement of energy, with consequences extending beyond the region and affecting the global economy. He stressed that securing energy transportation routes and addressing threats to energy flows require dialogue, collective action and sustainable solutions.
He added that agreements among gas-producing and exporting countries could play an important role in managing global energy markets, ensuring reliable supplies and strengthening international cooperation.
Pezeshkian also described the summit as an opportunity to meet participating heads of state and hold bilateral talks. During his visit, he is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.
Describing Tehran-Moscow relations as growing, the Iranian president said the two countries would seek to expand cooperation across various fields.
He also underscored the importance of strengthening multilateralism and opposing unilateral policies, saying no single power should dictate its preferences or impose restrictions on other nations.
Referring to Iran's cooperation with Russia and other partners through BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Pezeshkian called for expanding trade using national currencies or mutually agreed financial arrangements.
He also criticized the use of the US dollar's international status as a tool for imposing sanctions and economic restrictions, arguing that such practices undermine countries' ability to pursue independent economic relations.
Pezeshkian said closer coordination among energy-producing nations could contribute to more effective market management, improve energy security and advance a more cooperative international order.
He expressed hope that the GECF summit and his talks with Putin would help deepen bilateral relations and advance shared economic and strategic priorities.
