In a congratulatory message on Monday, Pezeshkian expressed hope that relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Federative Republic of Brazil would grow stronger during Lula’s new presidency.
He also hoped that cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest would be enhanced in line with the interests of both nations and efforts to strengthen multilateralism, international development and peace.
The Iranian president wished Lula success in his important responsibilities and prosperity and well-being for the Brazilian people.
Lula, a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump, secured reelection in Brazil’s presidential runoff, defeating his rival Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, whom Lula defeated in 2022. According to Brazil’s electoral authorities, Lula won 51.8% of the vote, finishing nearly 4.4 million votes ahead of his opponent, with all ballots counted.
Lula’s victory came amid a broader political shift in Latin America toward right-leaning leaders aligned with Trump. His reelection is expected to see Brazil, the region’s largest economy, continue to emphasize national sovereignty amid tensions with Washington over trade and US influence in the region.
