Pezeshkian Calls for Closer Iran-Russia Cooperation

Meeting Lavrov on Monday, Pezeshkian expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations and stressed the need for closer political and diplomatic coordination.

Referring to his recent meetings and telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pezeshkian said joint programs are being pursued and voiced hope that his upcoming visit to Moscow would help turn existing agreements into tangible results.

The Iranian president also thanked the Russian government and people for their support during the recent war of aggression imposed by the US and the Israeli regime, emphasizing the importance of continued mutual support.

Highlighting agreements on the Caspian Sea and trade, Pezeshkian called for practical steps and clear timelines to implement agreements on energy, transportation and power generation.

Addressing regional and international developments, he condemned US and Israeli aggression against Iran, including the assassination of martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, military commanders, scientists and schoolchildren, as well as attacks on infrastructure. He said the attacks violated international law and took place while Iran was pursuing dialogue and diplomacy.

Pezeshkian said Iran opposes attempts by any country to impose its will on others through coercion, calling for an international order based on mutual respect, national rights, constructive cooperation and multilateralism. He said Tehran and Moscow share common views on these principles.

He also emphasized neighborhood diplomacy and stronger ties among Muslim countries, reiterating Iran’s readiness to resolve regional disputes through dialogue and regional mechanisms. He argued that US military bases in the region fuel tensions and insecurity, while expressing Tehran’s readiness to pursue joint initiatives with regional countries in peace, security, economic development, culture, science and people-to-people exchanges.

Pezeshkian identified BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as key platforms for expanding bilateral and regional cooperation, particularly in trade, transport and transit infrastructure.

For his part, Lavrov briefed Pezeshkian on his meetings with senior Iranian officials, saying the discussions have covered political, economic, commercial and cultural ties and underscored the need to accelerate existing agreements.

He cited oil and gas, transportation, energy, communications and media, cultural exchanges, and scientific and academic cooperation as key areas for further collaboration. Lavrov also stressed the two countries’ shared positions on international issues and the importance of continued diplomatic consultations to promote peace and security.

Referring to agreements concerning the Caspian Sea, the Russian foreign minister called for closer coordination to safeguard the two countries’ interests and strengthen regional stability.
