Geneva-Based Center Launches Campaign for Release of Tasnim Journalist Held in Israeli Prison

The Khiam Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in Geneva has launched the international legal and media campaign demanding the immediate release of Farah Abu Ayyash, a Palestinian journalist working for Tasnim News Agency who has been held in Israeli prisons since August 6, 2025.

The center called for serious international action to investigate her detention conditions and reports of torture and mistreatment by the Israeli regime.

The campaign comes more than a year after Abu Ayyash’s arrest, as her administrative detention has been repeatedly extended.

The case requires more than media coverage and demands sustained legal action and intervention by relevant international bodies, the center said.

Abu Ayyash is a Palestinian journalist from Beit Ummar, north of Hebron, who has worked with several Palestinian media outlets.

Her most recent work was with Tasnim International News Agency, where she reported on the suffering of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, documenting their daily lives under Israeli occupation and the actions of occupation forces.

According to information released by the Khiam Center, Abu Ayyash has been subjected to multiple forms of torture and mistreatment during her detention, including electric shocks, insults and confinement in cells infested with insects and cockroaches under inadequate personal hygiene conditions.

In response to these reports, the center called for an independent and effective investigation into the conditions of Abu Ayyash’s detention and the violations of her rights as a Palestinian prisoner.

It also demanded safeguards against torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, as well as accountability for Israeli regime officials if wrongdoing is established through the investigation.

The Khiam Center has also called for Abu Ayyash’s case to be raised at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva and referred to international human rights bodies and Arab and international journalists’ unions to increase pressure for her release.

The center also called for an international investigation into the detention conditions of the Tasnim journalist in the occupied West Bank and the reported torture and mistreatment she has faced.

It stressed the need to expand legal and media solidarity with Abu Ayyash, arguing that protecting journalists and upholding the rights of detainees require concrete action beyond statements and public declarations.

The center said Abu Ayyash’s case cannot be separated from those of other Palestinian journalists detained by the Israeli regime.

It added that demands for her release must form part of a broader effort to protect Palestinian journalists, investigate reported human rights violations and hold the Israeli regime’s officials accountable.

Against the backdrop of the genocide in Gaza and continuing Israeli occupation, the center’s campaign seeks to draw greater international attention to the treatment of Palestinian journalists and the need to enforce protections for media workers and detainees.

The Khiam Center urged human rights organizations, journalists’ unions, media professionals, international organizations, news outlets and all bodies working to defend press freedom and human rights to join the international campaign for Abu Ayyash’s release and that of other Palestinian journalists held in Israeli prisons.

It also emphasized the need to keep the case in the public eye, strengthen engagement with relevant international institutions and turn expressions of solidarity into sustained legal and diplomatic efforts.

The center said Abu Ayyash’s release and an investigation into her detention conditions are essential demands linked to press freedom, human rights and the protection of journalists.

It stressed that reported human rights violations must not be allowed to go uninvestigated and that accountability must remain central to efforts to protect Palestinian detainees.
