“US Secretary of State, nervous and anxious about another defeat at the United Nations, is pressuring and blackmailing heads of state and government of several countries to change their vote against the blockade,” Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said in a post on US social Media Company X, Anadolu Agency reported.
Rodriguez accused Washington of collectively punishing Cubans and urged the international community to oppose US policy.
The General Assembly will vote on a non-binding resolution calling for an end to the US embargo on Cuba, which has repeatedly received broad international support.
The accusation follows Rubio's call on Tuesday with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to discuss security cooperation and US priorities at the UN, according to a statement by the State Department.
Rubio urged El Salvador to work with Washington and like-minded partners to advance shared priorities at the UN, it said.
The statement said they discussed protecting critical infrastructure, including ports, from what Washington described as “malign foreign influences.” It did not identify the countries or entities to which the phrase referred.
The call comes as Washington seeks support for its positions at international organizations while maintaining pressure on Havana.
The US has maintained an economic embargo on Cuba for decades, seeking political change, while Havana has said the restrictions harm its population.
Cuba has repeatedly urged the international community to support the resolution demanding an end to the embargo.
The annual vote remains a source of diplomatic tension between Havana and Washington and a test of international support for ending US sanctions.
