Russia Offers to Mediate in Yemen Conflict As Fighting Escalates

“We tell everyone that we are not ready to land and impose ourselves. But if you are interested in our intermediary role, such a role will be played by us with absolutely pure intentions as an honest broker,” Alimov told RIA Novosti.

The diplomat said, however, that the parties to the conflict have so far not made any specific requests for Russia to mediate.

The Yemeni Ansarullah forces have controlled Yemen’s capital Sana’a and large parts of the country’s north since 2014.

They are opposed by forces loyal to Yemen’s ousted government, which has been supported by Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, tensions have intensified in recent days.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces, said on October 5 that the country’s military attacked targets in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid Airport in Riyadh and an Aramco oil refinery in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in multiple Yemeni provinces.

According to the Yemeni general, the attacks also targeted Abha airport, the Khamis Mushayt airbase and several facilities in the Najran and Jizan districts.

Separately, chairman of the so-called Presidential Governing Council of Yemen Rashad al-Alimi announced on October 5 the launch of a military operation by Saudi coalition support to retake territories controlled by the capital Sana’a.
