The killing comes amid repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, particularly in areas bordering the occupied Golan Heights, while residents of southern Syria face growing fears of detention, military raids, bombardment and further violence.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Israeli military claimed the Syrian citizen was killed after approaching an Israeli military position inside what it described as a “security zone” in southern Syria.
The Israeli army said its forces would continue operations in the security zone and eliminate any threat in the area.
The incident follows a series of Israeli incursions into Quneitra and surrounding areas.
On the previous day, an Israeli military patrol entered southern Syria following the resumption of excavation work in an area near what is known as the “Sufa 53 line.”
Syrian Al-Ikhbariya reported that Israeli forces entered the village of Al-Asbah in Quneitra province, raided homes and searched them.
The incursion coincided with Israeli forces firing flares over the town of Al-Hamidiyah in the province’s countryside and an Israeli drone flying over the area.
The latest developments came after Israeli forces resumed excavation work on Sunday along the separation line with the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, west of the village of Al-Asha in the Quneitra countryside.
The project, known as “Sufa 53” or the “Great Storm,” was launched by Israeli regime in mid-2022 near the town of Hader in northern Quneitra and was later expanded through the areas of Jaba al-Khashab and Al-Hamidiyah.
The project has also extended into Quneitra’s central areas, including Al-Qahtaniyah, Ruwayhinah, Bir Ajam and Bariqah.
The expansion has rendered thousands of dunams of agricultural land in the Quneitra countryside unsuitable for farming and grazing, while also affecting water flows and the area’s natural infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Israeli incursions have increasingly been accompanied by the establishment of temporary military checkpoints, searches of passersby and inspections of civilian homes in villages and towns entered by Israeli forces.
Local sources say such incursions have become a routine occurrence, often taking place without warning and involving gunfire, raids and the closure of major roads.
Israeli forces have established multiple checkpoints along roads and prevented Syrian civilians from passing through, according to local reports.
Residents of southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra, are sometimes left stranded for hours because of road closures, disrupting daily life and deepening a persistent sense of fear and insecurity.
The continued operations have placed particular pressure on civilians in the region, with farmers, young people and children among those affected by the repeated Israeli military activity.
The situation has unfolded as the Syrian administration led by Abu Mohammad al-Julani has faced criticism over what opponents describe as a passive response to Israeli criminal actions, while also reaching a security agreement with the Zionist regime.
