Reopening of Hormuz Out of Question without Iran’s Conditions Being Met

Hassan Qashqavi told reporters on Sunday that “those seven conditions must be fulfilled and finalized” before any opening of the Strait of Hormuz can be considered.

He said there has been no change in Iran’s position, explaining that the difference between the Islamabad and New York developments, which were presented through Qatar as an indirect mediator, concerned only the compression of the timeframe and not any change in Iran’s position or the substance of the matter.

Qashqavi stressed that the decision now rests with US officials, saying they apparently are heavily engaged in internal differences and are also approaching elections.

The parliamentary official said there is no ambiguity regarding the substantive issues that would require new negotiations, stressing that the main issue is the sequence of steps and their timing.

“In terms of the timing and sequence, the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened until those conditions are fulfilled,” Qashqavi said.

He added that “the ball is now in the US court” over whether Washington will honor what was signed between the two presidents.
