Araqchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov held a meeting on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.

The two foreign ministers discussed the state of bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, trade, transportation and energy fields, as well as coordination within international organizations.

Araqchi expressed appreciation for Russia’s “responsible positions” in opposing the US’ aggressive unilateralism and American misuse of international organizations to exert pressure on independent countries.

The Iranian and Russian foreign ministers also exchanged views on developments in West Asia following repeated breaches of commitments by the US and Washington’s violation of the provisions of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.

Araqchi also briefed Lavrov on the latest status of talks and understandings between Iran and Oman regarding the establishment of a safe maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz. He also informed his Russian counterpart about continued efforts by mediators to convey the conditions and necessary elements for a return to the diplomatic process.

The Iranian foreign minister described the current insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz as a direct result of the US’ breach of commitments and actions against Iran.

Recalling Iran’s goodwill during the negotiations that led to the Islamabad MoU on ending the war, Araqchi stressed that Tehran, while demonstrating seriousness in diplomacy, remains determined to defend its national interests and security and prevent the US from exploiting the Strait of Hormuz to threaten Iran’s national security.

Lavrov, for his part, reiterated Russia’s principled position condemning the US and Israeli military aggression against Iran and efforts by Washington and its allies to use international organizations as instruments to advance their objectives.

He also stressed the importance of all countries adhering to international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
