Iran Hosting COP7 Focusing on Caspian Sea Environmental Challenges

Shina Ansari, head of Iran’s Department of Environment, said the expert-level meetings of the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention will begin on Sunday and continue through Tuesday, with a high-level meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 23.

She said Iran’s efforts to organize the conference in the capital are aimed at ensuring that the environmental issues and challenges facing the Caspian Sea are addressed and followed up within a regional and international framework.

Ansari added that during the four-day meeting, participants will discuss key issues related to protecting the Caspian Sea environment, regional cooperation, common challenges, and ways to strengthen cooperation among the littoral states. Necessary decisions will also be made on agreed documents and issues, she noted.

The vice president added that Iran will seek at the meeting to use the potential of regional and international dialogue to seriously pursue important and common Caspian Sea issues and lay the groundwork for joint decisions and practical measures to protect the body of water.
