Araqchi, New OIC Secretary General Discuss Regional Developments

Araqchi congratulated Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election as the OIC chief and wished him success in his new position.
The Iranian foreign minister expressed hope that the new secretary general would make effective use of the organization’s capacities to help strengthen unity and coordination among Muslim countries in addressing developments and challenges facing the Islamic world.
Araqchi also briefed the OIC chief on the latest regional developments following the US and Israeli regime’s aggression against Iran. He stressed the need for Islamic countries to respond responsibly to violations of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose the resort to force and aggression.
The Iranian foreign minister also pointed to the grave circumstances and challenges facing the Muslim world, particularly the continuation of the Israeli regime’s aggression and crimes in Palestine and Lebanon. He stressed the need for firm support for the rights of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples and for Islamic countries to adopt united and effective positions on these developments.
Araqchi also invited the new OIC secretary general to visit Tehran, expressing hope that the visit would take place at the earliest appropriate opportunity.
Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed is a Mauritanian diplomat and politician who previously served as Mauritania’s foreign minister. He also served as the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, where he was involved in international efforts to facilitate a political settlement to the conflict.
