Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart in Baghdad on Sunday during a visit to the Iraqi capital at the head of a diplomatic delegation for consultations with senior Iraqi officials.

During the meeting, Araqchi praised the Iraqi government’s responsible positions and the support expressed by different segments of Iraqi society for Iran in the face of the military aggression imposed by the US and the Zionist regime.

Describing relations between Tehran and Baghdad as exceptional, the Iranian foreign minister stressed the determination of Iranian officials to further strengthen bilateral ties across all fields of mutual interest.

Araqchi also congratulated Iraq on the formation of its new government and expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries would continue to expand in political, economic, trade, cultural, security, and people-to-people spheres under the guidance of their leaders and officials, creating new opportunities for broader bilateral relations.

The Iranian foreign minister further thanked the Iraqi government for its measures and cooperation in facilitating the extensive participation of Iraqi citizens in the funeral ceremony of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, describing the move as a manifestation of the deep historical, cultural, and religious bonds linking the two nations.

For his part, Fuad Hussein emphasized the necessity of creating new mechanisms to ensure regional security with the participation of all countries in the region, saying the initiative could serve as an important step toward confidence-building and the establishment of indigenous and sustainable security arrangements.

The two foreign ministers also reviewed the latest regional and international developments, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, progress in implementing the agreement ending the Zionist regime’s military aggression against Lebanon, developments following the signing of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US, and the latest trends in the ongoing negotiations.

Both sides stressed the need for all parties to adhere to the commitments outlined in the MoU, saying its full implementation would contribute to consolidating peace, reducing tensions, and strengthening regional stability and security.
