Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesperson Ali Zeinivand said that, under existing legal frameworks, simultaneous elections for the Parliament and local councils are not possible because the Parliament is responsible for supervising council elections.

He explained that the current Parliament must remain in place to oversee the council vote and noted that both Iran’s Constitution and the general policies governing council elections support this arrangement.

However, Zeinivand said combining the presidential and parliamentary elections remains a possibility.

He noted that parliamentary elections are scheduled for late Iranian year 1406 (2028), while the presidential election is due in early 1407 (2028).

“We are trying to establish the legal mechanisms and remove legal obstacles so that it becomes possible to combine parliamentary and presidential elections,” he said.

The spokesperson added that authorities intend to hold local council elections within the same period while ensuring they do not overlap with parliamentary elections.
