Araqchi and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan held a telephone conversation on Monday to discuss recent regional developments and the latest status of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The Iranian foreign minister briefed his Saudi counterpart on the provisions and latest developments related to the Islamabad understanding.
Referring to the US’ responsibility for ensuring proper implementation of the agreement’s provisions, Araqchi stressed the need for a complete halt to the Zionist regime’s aggression against Lebanon.
He also expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s role in the current diplomatic process aimed at ending the imposed war by the US and the Zionist regime against Iran and reinforcing regional peace and security, emphasizing the importance of sustaining these efforts.
The two foreign ministers further stressed the continuation of close consultations and diplomatic cooperation between Tehran and Riyadh regarding regional developments and the need to strengthen efforts to establish peace in the region.
The call came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace deal had been reached between Iran and the United States following weeks of negotiations mediated by Pakistan with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. According to the announcement, the agreement provides for the immediate and permanent end of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi later confirmed that the memorandum had been finalized, saying Tehran had incorporated its key positions into the text and would verify implementation of US commitments before entering the next phase of negotiations. He said the agreement includes ending the US naval blockade and paving the way for broader talks on sanctions relief, reconstruction, and other issues.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council subsequently stated that the finalized MoU would end war and military operations across all fronts and that future negotiations would proceed only after implementation of commitments by the other side. According to an informed source, final amendments proposed by Iran also included provisions related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
