Ali Baqeri, who has traveled to Moscow to attend the 14th International Meeting of High Representatives Responsible for Security Issues, said at the end of his three-day visit to Russia that he has held constructive discussions with senior security officials from countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, as well as neighboring states.
He noted that Iran’s position, presented in meetings with senior security representatives of other countries, emphasizing the need for a new security equation following the recent military aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime, was met with a positive reception.
Baqeri stressed that the formation of this new security equation must be based on the participation of regional countries, while rejecting US interference and opposing the influence of the Zionist regime.
Referring to a special meeting of high-level security officials from BRICS member states held in Moscow, he described it as a substantive session in which participants discussed international developments and global issues.
He said Iran underlined in the meeting that the US and Israeli aggression against the country had exposed the weaknesses of the existing regional security architecture, adding that addressing the root causes of the current situation requires confronting US presence and Israeli influence in the region.
The deputy secretary noted that the role of Russia and China as BRICS members in opposing unilateral US sanctions and Western illegal actions, including the snapback mechanism, was also highlighted.
He described the Moscow security meeting as a platform to counter US unilateralism and an opportunity to consolidate the views of independent countries and amplify them at the international level, which he said Washington does not welcome as it seeks to prevent countries from pursuing independent policies.
Baqeri further said this year’s meeting was particularly significant as it followed two blatant acts of aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime, and came after the martyrdom of senior Iranian officials, including former secretaries of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani and Ali Larijani.
Baqeri added that Iran’s proposals presented in Moscow meeting reflected the view that the existing regional order cannot ensure the security of regional countries, and that Tehran’s new ideas had received broad resonance.
There is now widespread acknowledgment that the US has been a source of instability in the region, with its military bases serving as one of the manifestations of that role, he added.
