Trump’s Hormuz Statement Described as ‘Face-Saving Retreat’

In its latest “Trump Check” segment, Tasnim News Agency examined a recent social media post by US President Donald Trump regarding the suspension of what he called “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had attempted in a 100-word post to explain Washington’s retreat from a hostile and adventurist move in the strategic waterway, but all parts of the message —except Trump’s signature at the end— were detached from reality.
Claim 1: Trump said the retreat came at the request of Pakistan and other countries.
Check: Trump has repeatedly shown that if he believes an idea will succeed, recommendations or objections from other countries —even from across Europe and the Americas— have no impact on his decisions.
Even if Pakistan had indeed made such a request, Trump’s reference to it was merely an attempt at “face-saving” and carried no other significance.
Claim 2: Trump linked the decision to “great progress” toward a “complete and final agreement” with Iranian representatives.
Check: The reality is that after the start of the failed American adventure, not only had no progress been made in exchanged messages, but Iran had effectively given no response to Washington’s latest nine-point proposal, which itself had been presented in reply to Iran’s earlier 14-point proposal.
Tehran chose to respond to American pressure and bullying “with the language of force.”
Even before the recent US action, despite the exchange of proposals between the two sides over the past 10 days, no meaningful progress had been achieved.
Trump’s attempt to portray the American defeat and dismal retreat as the result of alleged diplomatic progress is indeed another effort to preserve Washington’s image.
Basically, one of the narratives promoted by American media before the recent US military aggression was that Washington had resorted to military pressure precisely because negotiations had failed to produce significant progress.
How can the United States now claim that major diplomatic progress had prompted its retreat, despite diplomacy being in a worse state than before the recent US hostile actions?
Claim 3: Trump said “Project Freedom” was paused to determine whether an agreement could be finalized.
Check: Whenever Washington fails to force Iran into submission at the negotiating table, it attempts alternative methods to pressure Tehran, only to fail again before eventually claiming it wants to “give diplomacy a chance.”
The reality is that for the United States, the term “diplomacy” has effectively become a way to avoid openly admitting defeat. If Washington genuinely believed in diplomacy, it would not repeatedly turn to coercive or military measures.
Diplomacy appears to have become merely a “hiding place” for Trump to shield himself from criticism over repeated failures.
It appears that the only truthful part of Trump’s latest post is his own name at the end of the statement!
